If We Are in Love, How Come This Is Such Hard Work?

Dan and Linda* felt it was a match made in heaven. Then Dan proposed, they moved in together, and things went from good to bad to worse, sometimes all in the same week.

Now they both wonder if they’re making a big mistake.

Deciding who to marry is one of life’s biggest decisions. It’s rarely one decision, though. It’s lots of smaller ones along the way.

Is this the right partner, and how do you know? What needs to be figured out to take you from attracted, to committed, to building a life together?

Marriage is not a “set it and forget it” arrangement, where everyone lives happily ever after the moment you both say “I do.” It should be fun and joyful. It’s also work to get through the rough patches.

Helping couples through the ups and downs that come with every relationship is what I do.

Individuals

I’ve Done Everything I Was Supposed to Do. Why Am I Still Unhappy?

Ben* graduated from a top school. He’s been working hard to get promoted, and he keeps wondering whether the problem is him, his job, or the fact that he still hasn’t met his life partner.

By most standards he’s accomplished a lot. So why doesn’t he feel better about himself or where he is in life?

Many of us are living out a script that someone else seems to have written.

How do you find your “True North,” the focus that lets you feel genuinely committed to your work and the people in your life?

Life doesn’t come with a playbook of simple answers. What you thought would work ten years ago isn’t what works now.

Finding your direction sometimes means revisiting your past: what has worked for you, what hasn’t, and where you want to go next.

Family Business

It Seemed Like a Perfect Opportunity. Was Joining the Family Business a Big Mistake?

Tony* was always close with his dad and brothers. Building on the groundwork his grandfather laid, they seemed to have a good thing going.

As the last brother to join the business, though, he often felt unappreciated and disrespected. They made fun of his “fancy business degree.”

He knew he had something to offer.

Working alongside them showed him sides of his father and brothers that left him unsure this was the place for him.

How could he tell his father that things needed to change?

After a few background meetings, I met with Tony’s father, and we eventually brought the whole family into the conversation. Even Tony’s mom had thoughts that needed to be heard.

Family businesses are complicated. This is work I’ve done for years, weighing the legal, financial, and interpersonal pieces together so families can make the best decisions for the next generation.

This rare combination of business and clinical experience is what sets my practice apart.

The Long View

People Aren’t Simple,
and Relationships Can Be Complex.

They Don’t Have to Make You Miserable.

My years as a business consultant, academic, and therapist have shown me the many ways people work together, successfully and unsuccessfully.

I’ve seen the mistakes. I know where the pitfalls can be.

Let me help guide you to a better path.

Meet Dr. Sirkin

Hi, I’m Mark.

Mark Sirkin, PhD

For more than 40 years, I’ve worked as a clinical psychologist. Lately my focus has narrowed to what I find most rewarding: couples, individuals, family businesses, and partnerships of every kind.

Whether it’s conflict, a desire to separate, or simply a wish to make things better, my work is helping people with the interpersonal issues they carry into the marriage, the family, or the office.

People who work with me appreciate that I’m an author and an academic who believes deeply in the power of psychology to help them live better, more fulfilling lives. Working with individuals who want to understand themselves better is part of that, too.

Family businesses hold a particular interest for me, whether multi-generational companies, siblings in partnership, or couples who work together.

Recently I re-started my practice in Westchester County, based in White Plains, after years in academia.

My work almost always begins with an assessment, one to four sessions, to make sure we’re focused on the right issues. Good therapy has a beginning (the assessment and treatment plan), a middle (the therapy itself), and an end (techniques to reinforce your success).

The goal is to give you tools, knowledge, and insight that change your life.

Ben*

stopped measuring his life against a script he never wrote. He found his True North, and the work and the people in his life finally feel like his own.

Tony*

sat down with his father and said the things that needed saying. The family business is still complicated. Now there’s a way to talk about it.
